Young and Developing Artists

Opera Queensland's Young Artist Program is a unique training program for emerging performers in the field of opera, providing them with a valuable opportunity to refine professional skills.

Under the leadership of Program Director, renowned Queensland performer, teacher and creative artist Jason Barry-Smith this comprehensive Program is unique of its kind in Australia. Every year a small group of talented artists is chosen for one of two streams: Young Artist or Developing Artist. Each individual is selected for his or her talent, dedication and professionalism; all possess great potential to make a significant contribution to the operatic artform. Nurturing our developing talent in this way helps to lay a solid foundation for the future health of opera, and as such it is an essential part of the company's vision.

Young Artist Stream

Artists participating in this program undertake an intensive 32-week program which includes a range of activities, classes and performance opportunities as detailed below. Repetiteurs may also audition to participate in the Program. If accepted, repetiteurs learn through assisting and taking part in all activities, as well as by coaching, and playing for stage rehearsals and Chorus music calls. At the same time, the Head of Music and music staff supervise development of repertoire and skills.

  • Weekly schedule of one-on-one repertoire coaching
  • Individual language coaching in major operatic languages
  • Individual sessions or classes in various movement and stagecraft disciplines such as drama, concert presentation, basic dance, historical gesture and combat
  • Masterclasses, workshops and private lessons are arranged with visiting specialists such as renowned Australian and international teachers, singers, directors and conductors
  • A number of special workshops and lectures are offered dealing with aspects of stagecraft and the profession
  • A wide range of concert opportunities, featuring both standard operatic and popular or music theatre works, provides performing experience and broadens repertoire and style

Developing Artist Stream

Running in conjunction with the intensive program for Young Artists is a program designed for Developing Artists which further extends the opportunities for young singers to benefit from the company's professional development resources. Introduced in 2001, this Program was created to provide training and professional support for young Brisbane-based artists beginning or studying for a career in opera, whilst allowing the flexibility for them to pursue other study and work commitments.

Developing Artists are invited to participate in group activities offered to Young Artists, and receive individual coaching and tuition in repertoire and language on a regular basis. Where possible, Developing Artists are offered opportunities to perform in concerts, recitals and other public events, thereby increasing their repertoire and professional profile. Independent learning and self-motivation is encouraged and promoted at all times.
